Volvo Trucks North America customer Martin Brower, a leading supply chain solutions provider for global restaurant chains, is taking delivery of ten additional Volvo VNR Electric vehicles that will support food and beverage deliveries to select McDonald’s restaurants in the greater Montreal and greater Toronto areas. As a key distributor for McDonald&#039;s global operations, Martin Brower has partnered with the restaurant leader to help reduce its carbon footprint in Canada with the expansion of alternative-fuel vehicles in Martin Brower’s supply chain fleet in two of its distribution centres. The battery-electric vehicles used for deliveries to select McDonald’s restaurants in the greater Montreal and greater Toronto areas will expand on the trial of the first zero-tailpipe emission tractor that was deployed in 2022 to Martin Brower’s Baie d’Urfé distribution centre to support deliveries to McDonald’s restaurants in the Montreal area.“It’s exciting to see a powerhouse brand like McDonald’s working with their partners to help decarbonize the transportation of goods,” said Matthew Blackman, managing director for Canada, Volvo Trucks North America. “It’s a testament to the performance and reliability of the Volvo VNR Electric that these global leaders are choosing to scale their trial of battery-electric vehicles where feasible.”The first Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric tractor to service McDonald’s restaurants in North America was part of a trial in the Montreal area, to assess the heavy-duty battery-electric vehicle’s ability to handle routine routes and large product loads. Following this initial trial, McDonald’s Canada and Martin Brower collaborated to deploy ten more Volvo VNR Electric vehicles. Seven of these vehicles will operate in the greater Toronto area, while the remaining three will be domiciled at the Montreal distribution centre in Baie-D&#039;Urfé and operate in the greater Montreal area.“After two years with the battery-electric Volvo VNR tractor on the road, we are pleased to see more electric vehicles added to the fleet serving McDonald’s restaurants in the trial areas, as we work towards our global pledge to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050” said Hope Bentley, head of supply chain, McDonald’s Canada. “Even though customers won’t notice any difference in their favourite order, McDonald’s is taking action behind the scenes to help make an impact in the communities we serve, for the planet we share.”

Martin Brower is a long-time service provider for McDonald’s, partnering since 1956 to deliver food and beverage products to founder Ray Kroc’s first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. Both companies have pledged objectives relating to GHG emissions reduction, with McDonald’s aiming to achieve net-zero GHG emissions globally by 2050 and Martin Brower targeting a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 from a 2018 baseline.Martin Brower worked with Vision Truck Group, a local Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle Dealer, to spec the ideal truck configuration based on the routes and application monitored during the Montreal trial. Vision Truck Group utilized the Electric Performance Generator (EPG) tool to identify the preferred Volvo VNR Electric configurations for Martin Brower to best service McDonald’s restaurants in the test market. The EPG takes into consideration specific route details, including traffic patterns and environmental factors, such as terrain and ambient temperature. The electric vehicles based in the Baie d’Urfé distribution centre will be serviced by Camions Volvo Montreal, which assisted Martin Brower with its first 6x4 configuration Volvo VNR Electric tractor during the initial trial. The electric vehicles operating in the greater Toronto area will be serviced by Vision Truck Group. McDonald’s pledge to achieve net-zero GHG emissions globally by 2050 aligns with the initiative behind the Montreal trial, testing lower tailpipe emission vehicles with its supply chain partner, Martin Brower.

As a key distributor for McDonaldʼs, Martin Browerʼs new 8-pallet Volvo FL electric refrigerated truck will deliver 7 days a week to McDonaldʼs restaurants across the greater Sydney metropolitan area. Martin Brower Australia New Zealand (ANZ) is excited to share that we recently opened two new distribution centres (DCs) in Northwest and Southeast Melbourne, Australia. The DCs’ features and locations are aligned with our strategy of architecting smart, sustainable supply chains that fuel growth.The two locations are strategically located close to our customers&#039; restaurants and major motorways. This allows us to optimize routes and delivery times and reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, supporting a 50 percent reduction in emissions by 2030 based on a 2018 baseline.

The new DCs offer storage and capacity to support nearly 20 years of growth. Additionally, this capacity supports delivery to restaurants at a frequency aligned with their needs while servicing reverse logistics and circular waste initiatives to help them meet their sustainability goals.Martin Brower ANZ has an expansive footprint of eight DCs with nearly 800 employees, serving more than 1,200 restaurants. All our DCs are ISO certified and have advanced warehouse management and temperature control technologies, ensuring optimal compliant conditions for stored products while enhancing operational efficiency.

Recently, Martin Brower (MB) partnered with Tesla to pilot the use of all-electric Semis out of our Stockton, California distribution center (DC).  Martin Brower is among several companies in the US to use the Tesla Semi.As part of our strategic sustainability goals, Martin Brower is committed to being the leader in creating net-zero logistics solutions for our customers and reducing our climate impact through science-based targets.The key to accomplishing our sustainability goals is to create a resilient fleet of the future by deploying the latest alternative fuel technologies, which Tesla is a leader in. Piloting the Semi within our fleet was a natural step towards achieving that goal.The pilot ran earlier this year and included two all-electric Semis running routes to restaurants serviced by our Stockton DC.A group of five MB drivers, Frank Solari, Leo Alvarez, Casey Kamp, Carlos Nava, and Javier Hernandez, were trained to operate the Tesla Semi, which uniquely positions the steering wheel and driver’s seat in the center of the cockpit and has other design features to increase driver visibility and safety. Overall, our drivers had positive feedback on how the vehicle performs.Currently, the Tesla Semi can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge and reach a full charge quickly using a Semi Charger.Chargers could be installed on-site at a DC and would further lower our carbon footprint as all our US DCs are fully powered by renewable energy.Martin Brower will review the results of the pilot to consider implementing the Tesla all-electric Semis into our West Coast fleet as California state regulations will begin to push zero-emission vehicles starting in 2026-27.

At Martin Brower, we are committed to driving forward our net zero goals. We are making meaningful progress by fostering resilience within our distribution centers, including purchasing renewable electricity that covers our DCs. In 2022, we led an effort, together with McDonald’s and the North American Logistics Council, to purchase solar power to cover the electricity usage for 100% of our United States distribution centers.  A key component was to leverage partnerships across the system to drive a bigger impact than any of us could do on our own. Martin Brower and Kodiak are using autonomous vehicles to haul quick service restaurant food between Dallas and Oklahoma City eight times per week; companies eye future partnership expansion.

Martin Brower Partners with Kodiak to Autonomously Deliver Time-Critical Refrigerated Freight

Martin Brower first acquired their business in Brazil in 1982 and has since grown it to be one of their largest markets, distributing from 6 DCs to businesses such as McDonald&#039;s, Domino’s, Bob&#039;s, Giraffas, Pizza Hut, KFC and Subway. Their São Paulo, Brazil operations are made up of 3 facilities – distribution centers in Guarulhos and Jacareí and a corporate office in Osasco. Combined they employee +1400 people.

In 2023 a major renovation of the São Paulo facilities was completed – providing a beautiful corporate office space and state-of-the-art distribution center in Guarulhos for the team. Many of the renovations and upgrades made in Reyes Family of Businesses facilities are made to further our Reyes Cares promise of creating positive change in the communities in which we live and work.In the corporate office: 100% LED lighting was installed, printers were reduced by 50% to minimize paper use and selective waste collection was added to impact sustainability goals positively. Two inclusive bathrooms were added, an elevator was installed and other building adaptations were added for those with special needs.

They also focused on creating collaborative and innovative spaces team: 9 phone/conference rooms (for 1, 2 or 4 people), 230 desks, open concept space for co-working, desks for wheelchair users, a new break room, a podcast room, and a special room named ‘Arena MB’ for employees to rest on break with sofas, televisions and board games. Overall, they increased the number of workplaces by approximately 30%.

In the distribution center: 130 employees prepare over 2000 SKUs to be delivered out of a nearly 300,000-square-foot warehouse – the largest for Martin Brower in Brazil. As part of the recent renovation, they drastically improved the efficiency of the building by adding an ethylene glycol (ethanol-based) cooling system, all-electric forklifts and pallet trucks, natural lighting through skylights to reduce daytime energy usage and automatic lighting throughout to make necessary lighting use as efficient as possible.

Facility Spotlight – MB São Paulo, Brazil

TMX Transform says construction has started on a new food distribution warehouse in Queensland for global supply chain solutions provider for restaurant chains Martin Brower ANZ.Martin Brower pre-committed to a 15-year lease term on the new 9301 sqm temperature-controlled DC located at Karawatha on a 28,332 sqm site.

The custom-designed facility will deliver chilled, frozen, and ambient storage capability. The Brisbane south site will also provide refuelling, truck wash, and weighbridge facilities, and space to park and manage the Martin Brower fleet.LOGOS acquired the brownfield site in April 2021 due to its strategic location: the site is at the interchange of Ipswich and Logan Motorways, 23 km southwest of Brisbane CBD, giving unparalleled access to Brisbane’s key arterial road networks.Vaughan Constructions will build the facility, which <a target="_blank" href="https://mhdsupplychain.com.au/2023/12/07/health-and-pharma-investing-big/">TMX Transform</a> procured under competitive tender. TMX is providing ongoing construction delivery management and project support to Martin Brower until completion, expected in the second half of 2024.

The facility targets a 5-star green rating and certification, incorporating sustainable design, energy management, recycling, and waste management facilities.The new DC is scheduled to be operational by late 2024.

The new distribution centre represents a significant milestone for Martin Brower, doubling our capacity in Queensland and ensuring we can continue to deliver the highest quality of service to our customer.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.carriertransicold.co.uk">Carrier Transicold</a> has unveiled at the Solutrans tradeshow a new version of its Vector ® HE 19 unit, designed to reduce the carbon output of its flagship temperature-controlled trailer system. An initial prototype is undergoing in-depth testing with Fraikin and Martin Brower, two existing customers. Carrier Transicold is part of Carrier Global Corporation (NYSE: CARR), global leader in intelligent climate and energy solutions.Underlining Carrier Transicold’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, this new version of the Vector ® HE 19 can run on a new refrigerant with a lower global warming potential (GWP), to significantly reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions without compromising performance. The system is also compatible with B100 biofuel.Customers will be able to use the new low-GWP refrigerant and the B100 fuel in combination or separately. The new lower GWP refrigerant can deliver an 88% CO2 savings over the standard R452A refrigerant. With refrigerant accounting for around 15% of a conventional refrigeration unit’s total CO2 emissions, this represents a significant reduction. The B100 biofuel, typically derived from recycled vegetable oils, animal fats or cooking oils, alone reduces the carbon emissions of the newly modified Vector ® HE 19 by between 60% and 91%, depending on the type of B100 used, compared with a standard diesel unit. The system harnesses the Coanda effect – which helps cool air ‘stick’ to the roof of the trailer – to ensure consistent temperature control throughout, helping to maintain the integrity of the cold chain. McDonald&#039;s Corporation and all five members of the restaurant chain&#039;s North American Logistics Council (NALC) – Armada, Earp Distribution, Martin Brower, Mile Hi Foods and The Anderson-DuBose Company – have signed agreements with <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.enelnorthamerica.com/">Enel North America</a> to purchase renewable energy and the associated renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Enel Green Power&#039;s Blue Jay solar project in Grimes County, Texas. This innovative aggregation of a major company purchasing power jointly with its logistics partners means the electricity load of McDonald&#039;s USA&#039;s entire logistics supply chain for all its U.S. restaurants is expected to be 100% supported by renewable energy.The Blue Jay solar project is expected to be fully operational in 2023. Once complete, McDonald&#039;s and its suppliers&#039; combined electricity purchase is expected to amount to an estimated average of over 470,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of renewable energy annually. <h3>First tractor in use</h3>Surrey, B.C. — October 27, 2022: Martin Brower of Canada Co. (Martin Brower), a leading logistics service provider for restaurant chains around the world, is operating its first tractor for McDonald’s Canada food delivery services on 100 percent Renewable Natural Gas (RNG)[1] provided by FortisBC Energy Inc. (FortisBC). The first tractor is in operation, with an additional six scheduled to arrive later this year. The tractors are being tested in British Columbia to assess the feasibility of using them to deliver to McDonald’s Canada restaurants across Canada where possible.“At McDonald’s Canada, we know making small changes to our supply chain can result in a big impact, which is why we’re working with our long-time distribution partner Martin Brower to help us use our scale for good,” said Rob Dick, Supply Chain Officer at McDonald’s Canada. “Globally, we’ve pledged to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050–a pledge that we are continuing to make progress towards here in Canada by investing in real and tangible changes like testing seven new Kenworth tractors powered by RNG provided by FortisBC.”

In 2021, construction on the new 59,000 square-foot Martin Brower facility in Nancy, France was completed. This project was awarded France’s HQE (High-Quality Environmental) Certification based on the principles of sustainable development. Specifically, it was built using innovative installations with respect for our planet at the forefront of planning such as:<ul><li>LED lighting</li><li>high-performance cooling installations with Transcritical CO2 technology and low air speed ventilation.</li></ul>

Nancy operates as one of eight Martin Brower - France distribution centers that together deliver +64 million cases to over 1,500 McDonald&#039;s restaurants throughout the entirety of the country. The local Nancy team of 51 employees delivers +5.1 million of those cases to approximately 135 restaurants.

As part of our Reyes Cares: Fuel &amp; Emissions initiative, Martin Brower Canada is partnering with McDonald’s Canada to conduct a pilot program utilizing the Volvo VNR Electric Class 8 tractor. This pilot program will help both parties assess the feasibility of scaling alternative fuel vehicles to service more than 1,400 restaurants across Canada.

Martin Brower has been a key supply chain partner for McDonald’s globally since it opened its first restaurant in the U.S. in 1956 and works closely with the restaurant leader to continue to reduce its global carbon footprint. The Martin Brower Canada team is excited at the chance to test this new technology and will deliver to local McDonald’s restaurants within a 95-mile range of the Montreal Distribution Centre over the coming months:

Due to the vastly different seasons in Quebec, it seemed the perfect location to kick-off the initiative to demonstrate the effectiveness and reliability of the battery-electric drivetrain in both the heat of a Montreal summer and the cold of winter. The result? A solar farm, operational since Q4 of 2022, designed to offset 100% of the US electricity carbon footprint.
